Frequently Asked Questions

Mount Rinjani (Indonesian: Gunung Rinjani) is an active volcano situated on Lombok Island, Indonesia, within the Mount Rinjani National Park. It lies specifically in North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara province. The mountain is famous for its spectacular caldera, Segara Anak Lake, and is a popular trekking destination.

To get to Mount Rinjani from abroad, fly to Lombok International Airport (LOP) in Indonesia, then proceed to Senaru or Sembalun, the main gateways for Rinjani trekking. You can also travel to Lombok from Bali by plane or fast boat.

Many airlines fly to Lombok, with direct flights from major Asian cities such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali.

There are daily direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Scoot operates four nonstop flights weekly from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to Lombok International Airport (LOP).

The best time to hike Mount Rinjani is from April to October, during the dry season. However, due to climate change, occasional rainfall can still occur during these months. The national park is closed from January to March due to heavy rain and increased risk along the trail.

At sunrise, the summit of Mount Rinjani (3726m) can reach temperatures between 0°C to 3°C. On the crater rim (2639m), including Senaru’s rim (2641m), nighttime temperatures drop to around 8–10˚C, while around the lake, Torean, and camp zones, it stays around 8–12˚C. During the day, temperatures across most locations reach 28–35˚C.

The duration to trek Mount Rinjani depends on the route and your fitness level, but it generally takes between 2 to 4 days. A 3-day, 2-night hike to the summit is popular, as it includes the crater lake and hot springs. Alternatively, a 2-day, 1-night trip to the crater rim offers spectacular views without reaching the summit. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, there’s also a 4-day, 3-night trek available.

No, climbing Mount Rinjani without a guide and porters is generally not permitted due to safety reasons, as stated by the National Park Authority. While it is technically possible, it’s strongly discouraged, especially for foreign trekkers. Guides and porters are essential to help with logistics and ensure safety. Only Indonesian citizens are allowed to trek without a guide.

There have been several incidents where hikers got lost, sustained injuries, or died on Mount Rinjani. In 2024 alone, two foreign trekkers were involved in a serious accident. They climbed without any guide or porter. One fell into a ravine and broke several bones after taking the wrong path, while the other went missing and has not been found since. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, highlighting the risks of trekking without proper assistance.

You can book a Rinjani trekking package with Climbrinjani.com. Our tours include experienced guides and porters. Your participation supports the local community and contributes to sustainable tourism.

The guide and porters carry essential items for the group – including meals, water, tents, and cooking tools. However, each trekker is responsible for their personal backpack. Due to differences in luggage size and weight, porter assignments vary.

If you’d prefer not to carry your own bag, you can hire an additional porter at a fair cost. Please arrange this ahead of time.

Tipping the guide and porter is not mandatory but is highly appreciated, especially if you are happy with their service. The amount is entirely up to you, based on your experience, satisfaction, and means.

You should bring at least the following: a compact backpack, warm jacket, long pants, sturdy trekking shoes or trail runners with good grip, and a headlamp if you’re aiming for the summit.

Yes, absolutely. If you have excess luggage that you won’t need during the trek, you can store it at the departure point. It’s actually recommended to only bring essentials on the hike, so your journey will be lighter and more enjoyable. No additional charge applies.

Trekking insurance is included with your permit and covers basic medical attention and emergency evacuation. However, we recommend having your own travel insurance in place before starting the trek for additional coverage.
